Print Engine html2canvas Background Parsing Fix & Export Resilience
Documents in Open Publisher often feature rich visual backdrops: full-bleed photographic textures, base64 data URLs, imported company watermarks, and compound background shorthands. Printing or exporting these documents requires the rasterization pipeline to interpret background properties cleanly without stalling. Earlier versions could encounter an immediate "Print Error: Failed to generate print file." alert dialog when printing pages with complex background rules. Version 5.7.4 resolved this issue through centralized background color sanitization, defensive rasterization fallbacks, and comprehensive protections across image and email export workflows.

Pages containing high-resolution photographic backgrounds and shadows and data URLs print seamlessly with zero syntax rejections.
html2canvas parseColor Syntax Rejection Root Cause
The print failure stemmed from an incompatibility between compound CSS background declarations and the html2canvas canvas configuration:
-
Compound Background Forwarding: In extensions/print-engine.js, the print loop computed h2cBg = page.background || '#ffffff'. While linear and radial gradients were guarded against, image URLs (url(...)) and multi-token CSS shorthands (such as url("data:image/webp;base64,...") center center / cover no-repeat) were passed directly into the backgroundColor parameter.
-
Strict Color Token Parser: The html2canvas library strictly parses its backgroundColor option as a single CSS color value. When provided space-separated tokens or image URLs, its internal CSS parser threw a fatal SyntaxError: "Error parsing CSS component value, multiple values found when expecting only one".
-
Repeated Fallback Failure: Because the lower-resolution fallback raster pass reused the exact same backgroundColor argument, both attempts crashed in succession, triggering the modal error alert.
Centralized Sanitization via sanitizeH2cBackgroundColor
To resolve the parsing conflict cleanly at the source, Open Publisher introduced a universal sanitizer utility in core/core.js:
-
Strict Color Pattern Matching: window.sanitizeH2cBackgroundColor(bg, hasActiveTheme) checks if a background string matches valid single CSS color notation: hexadecimal (#fff, #123456), RGB/RGBA, HSL/HSLA, or recognized single named colors.
-
Transparent Fallback for Complex Styles: If the background includes url(...), gradient, multiple shorthand values, or an active theme, the function returns null (transparent canvas).
-
DOM-Level Background Rendering: Because pageWrapper.style.background already applies the complete CSS background to the DOM element itself, html2canvas renders the imagery and tiling directly on the element surface without crashing the canvas background parser.
Multi-Tier Fallback & Export Pipeline Resilience
In addition to background sanitization, Open Publisher added multi-tiered defenses across all raster-based export features:
-
Emergency Transparent Retry: In extensions/print-engine.js, the fallback raster pass is wrapped in a nested try/catch block. If rasterization ever fails with a background color, it immediately performs an emergency retry with backgroundColor: null before failing.
-
Export to Image Parity: In io/export/canvas-renderer.js, the high-resolution image exporter routes background properties through sanitizeH2cBackgroundColor, ensuring PNG and JPEG exports never crash on complex backgrounds.
-
Email Attachment Export: In io/export/export.js, the HTML email generator applies identical sanitization to page raster attachments, guaranteeing dependable email sharing.
Tip: When designing publications with full-bleed backgrounds, you can freely mix photographic wallpapers with overlay shapes; the print engine will preserve all layers with exact fidelity.
