Ultra High-Resolution WordArt & Anisotropic Supersampling

Ultra High-Resolution WordArt & Anisotropic Supersampling

When creating prominent posters, display signage, and book covers, WordArt headlines are frequently scaled to massive physical sizes or stretched into tall banners. In earlier releases, stretching a WordArt element tall caused noticeable vertical pixelation on high-DPI and 4K displays because scaling relied on a single uniform dimension multiplier. Version 5.2.2 introduced an anisotropic supersampling engine, generating independent dual-axis rasters up to 6,000px by 4,500px for vector-grade clarity at any scale.

WordArt typography maintains vector-grade sharpness regardless of horizontal or vertical stretch.

The Root Cause of Editor Blur

Technical investigation identified three reasons why stretched WordArt suffered from soft edges on screen:

  • Vertical Aspect-Ratio Starvation: WordArt headlines are naturally 4x to 8x wider than they are tall. Prior engines evaluated dimensions with a single multiplier, producing a canvas ~5,000px wide but only ~1,000px tall. When stretched tall (e.g., 400px to 600px tall on canvas), those 1,000 vertical pixels were stretched across high-DPI screens, resulting in less than 1.0x physical pixel density.

  • Delayed Re-Baking: During interactive mouse resizing, dimensions were updated on every mouse move, but canvas re-rendering was deferred until mouse release. Users saw pixelated images while actively resizing.

  • Bilinear Texture Filtering: Default Chromium compositor heuristics applied soft bilinear resampling to scaled canvas textures, reducing edge sharpness.

The Anisotropic Supersampling Pipeline

Rather than compromising print stability with fragile live SVG/CSS text that misaligns across PDF viewers, Open Publisher implements high-resolution anisotropic supersampling:

  • Independent Dual-Axis Scaling: Canvas rendering functions accept separate horizontal and vertical scale multipliers (safeScaleX up to 12.0x, safeScaleY up to 18.0x). The 2D canvas renders vector glyphs directly at the element's exact aspect ratio.

  • Synchronous Baseline Dimension Caching: Baseline unscaled dimensions are cached upon first render (baselineDimCache). When resized, the engine instantly computes target dimensions guaranteed at 3.0x to 4.5x device pixel density, generating canvases up to 6,000px by 4,500px.

  • 40ms Debounced Drag Sharpening: Interactive mouse movements trigger a 40ms debounced refresh (refreshBetaWordArt). The typography dynamically re-bakes and sharpens in real time as you drag resize handles.

  • GPU Contrast Optimizations: Added image-rendering: -webkit-optimize-contrast and image-rendering: high-quality to .beta-wa-img, directing the GPU compositor to prioritize crisp boundary contrast.

Page Serialization & Metadata Preservation

Version 5.2.2 also resolved a page serializer bug where WordArt elements lost styling attributes during multi-page transitions. WordArt text, style identifiers, and supersampling bounds are now fully preserved across undo/redo history, page swaps, and document saves.

Tip: WordArt elements exported to PDF or high-DPI PNG retain this full 6,000px raster resolution, ensuring sharp output on commercial offset presses.
