Exporting, Distributing & Sharing Custom Templates
Custom templates enable design studios, educational institutions, and corporate teams to maintain visual consistency across recurring publications such as weekly newsletters, product flyers, menus, and corporate stationery. While Open Publisher allows users to save any active layout directly into local browser storage as a personal template, production workflows require sharing these templates across multiple workstations, design teams, and community galleries. Open Publisher supports an exportable template packaging architecture that encapsulates layout geometry, embedded assets, and metadata into portable template packages.
Package publication designs into portable template bundles with custom metadata and high-DPI thumbnails.
The Template Package Architecture
An Open Publisher template package encapsulates complete publication parameters in a standardized structure:
Template Manifest (manifest.json): Stores metadata including template title, creator name, category classification (e.g., Newsletters, Brochures, Cards, Certificates), descriptive summary, and search tags.
Canvas Geometry & Grid Specs: Records paper format (Letter, A4, Tabloid, custom), orientation, margin guidelines, multi-column snap grids, and bleed dimensions.
Asset Self-Containment: Embedded raster imagery, vector shape coordinates, custom color themes, and typography references are bundled into the package, ensuring the layout opens identically on any target system.
Automated High-DPI Thumbnail Generation
To ensure templates appear prominently in gallery pickers:
Offscreen Canvas Capture: During the export sequence, Open Publisher automatically renders an offscreen high-resolution capture of the front cover spread.
Crisp Gallery Previews: The snapshot is downsampled into a crisp 400x300 preview image bundled directly inside the template archive. When other users browse templates in the Startup Dashboard, preview images display instantly without parsing the full document DOM.
Importing & Distributing Shared Templates
Template packages can be shared across teams via network storage, cloud drives, or email attachments. Recipients can import shared templates by dragging the package file directly onto the Startup Dashboard or selecting Import Template from the Template Gallery. Once imported, the template appears permanently under the Custom Templates section ready for immediate creation.
Tip: Before exporting a template for team distribution, replace specific company or personal details with clear placeholder labels (e.g., "[Your Organization Name]").
