Atomic Saves & Auto-Recovery

Atomic Saves & Auto-Recovery

Losing hours of creative work to a sudden power outage, disk error, or operating system crash is every designer's worst nightmare. The Open Publisher V5 desktop client introduces an enterprise-grade document protection architecture that operates quietly in the background, combining zero-freeze atomic saves with real-time change tracking and automated crash recovery.

Zero-Corruption Atomic Saves

In traditional publishing software, saving directly over an existing file can corrupt the document if the computer freezes or loses power halfway through writing data. Open Publisher V5 completely eliminates this risk through atomic file operations:

  1. Staging to Temporary Storage: When you press Ctrl + S, Open Publisher serializes your document into an isolated temporary file (filename.opub.tmp) on the same disk drive.

  2. Hardware Cache Flush: The system forces the operating system to flush all write caches directly to disk, guaranteeing that every byte of text, vector artwork, and photography is verified intact.

  3. Automated Backup Rotation: Before touching your original publication, the previous copy is automatically archived as a safety snapshot (filename.opub.bak), keeping your prior version immediately recoverable.

  4. Instant Atomic Rename: In a single split-second atomic operating system operation, the temporary file replaces the main document. Even in a catastrophic power failure, your file is mathematically guaranteed never to be left in a half-written or corrupted state.

Non-Blocking Async Saving

Large publications containing dozens of high-resolution images can take several seconds to compress and write to disk. In V5, the save pipeline runs completely asynchronously in background threads. You can continue typing, dragging elements, and navigating pages without the interface ever pausing, stuttering, or locking up.

Real-Time Change Tracking & Smart Exit

Open Publisher V5 keeps you continuously informed about the safety of your document without intrusive alert banners:

  • Dirty-State Asterisk (*): The moment you edit a text box, adjust a color, or reposition a photo, a subtle, non-intrusive asterisk (*) appears next to the document title in the top bar. The second your file is saved, the indicator vanishes.

  • Idle Auto-Save Prompts: If you step away from your desk while your work is unsaved, Open Publisher detects inactivity and quietly cues a non-stacking save notice so your progress is never forgotten.

  • Smart Exit Check: When you click the window close button, Open Publisher checks whether your work is clean. If no changes have been made since your last save, the app closes instantly with zero annoying popups. If you have unsaved changes, a sleek desktop modal presents clear options to Save, Discard, or Cancel.

Automated Crash Recovery

While rare, unexpected hardware faults or operating system out-of-memory events can occasionally terminate desktop processes. Instead of leaving you with a blank screen and lost progress, Open Publisher V5 incorporates an automated crash resurrection engine:

  • Instant Diagnostic Logging: The moment a crash event is detected, Open Publisher captures the current document state and generates a diagnostic log (OpenPublisher-Crash-Log.txt) directly on your Desktop for easy inspection.

  • Seamless Auto-Relaunch: The application automatically relaunches a clean, independent process and displays a native desktop recovery notification.

  • One-Click Work Restoration: You are presented with a friendly recovery dialog offering three simple choices:
    • Attempt Recovery: Automatically reloads your most recent safe snapshot from the backup vault so you can pick up exactly where you left off.
    • Let It Burn: Discards the crashed workspace and starts fresh with a blank canvas.
    • Pretend This Didn't Happen: Closes the recovery prompt and returns to your workspace.

Note: Backup snapshots are maintained independently from your working files, ensuring that even if an entire folder is accidentally moved, your recovery vault remains accessible.
