Customizing Shapes and Text with the Format Properties Window
While the ribbon provides quick access to common styles and colors, advanced design projects frequently require precise numeric control over fills, border weights, drop shadows, and object dimensions. Open Publisher features a modernized, tabbed Format Properties dialog that consolidates all object attributes into a clean, easy-to-navigate modal with real-time canvas previewing.
Easily switch between Fill, Line, Shadow, and Geometry tabs with real-time live preview updates on your publication canvas.
Opening the Format Properties Dialog
You can access the dialog whenever an editable shape, text box, Smart Arrow, or WordArt object is selected:
Context Menu: Right-click any shape or text container on the canvas and choose Format Properties... from the popup menu.
Ribbon Launcher: On the Format or Text Box Tools tab, click the small dialog launcher icon in the bottom-right corner of the Shape Styles group.
Multi-Tab Styling Controls
The dialog organizes styling properties into clearly categorized tabs:
Fill Tab: Configure Solid Fills, Linear Gradients, or Pattern Fills. Adjust color stops, gradient angles, and overall opacity percentage with fine-increment sliders.
Line & Border Tab: Set outline color, exact stroke thickness in points or pixels, dashed or dotted line styles, corner cap joins (round, miter, or bevel), and corner radius.
Shadow & Glow Tab: Add visual depth with directional drop shadows and soft radiant glows. Configure blur radius, offset distance, shadow angle, and color opacity with dedicated sliders.
Size & Geometry Tab: Review and adjust exact width and height dimensions in inches or millimeters, lock aspect ratios, enter rotation angles, and set internal padding margins for text boxes.
Live Canvas Updates & Clean Modern Design
The Format Properties window features real-time interactivity. As you adjust sliders or pick new color swatches inside the dialog, your object on the canvas updates immediately in the background, allowing you to evaluate visual balance without having to repeatedly close and reopen the window.
The dialog layout utilizes a clean white body with subtle neutral dividers, matching standard Open Publisher windows and ensuring color swatches appear true-to-life without ambient color cast.
Tip: You can double-click any slider handle in the Format Properties dialog to quickly reset that attribute back to its default value.
