Smooth WordArt Anti-Aliasing & Zoom-Aware Supersampling
High-resolution desktop publishing requires typography that looks pristine whether viewed on high-DPI displays or scaled to fit-to-window viewports (such as 40% to 60% zoom). While version 5.2.2 perfected high-resolution supersampling for stretched WordArt, unzoomed publications occasionally exhibited crunchy, pixelated letterform contours due to aggressive point-sampling. Version 5.2.3 delivers a dedicated smooth downsampling and anti-aliasing engine for WordArt, providing silky smooth contours across all editor magnifications while strictly preserving 300+ DPI print fidelity.
WordArt typography maintains smooth, anti-aliased curves at fit-to-page zoom with zero stair-stepping or crunchy edges.
The Downsampling Bottleneck in Modern Browsers
Technical profiling identified two factors responsible for crunchy contours at reduced zoom levels:
Nearest-Neighbor Point Sampling: In Chromium and WebKit browsers, the CSS property -webkit-optimize-contrast commands the GPU sampler to disable bilinear interpolation in favor of nearest-neighbor point sampling. At fractional scale factors, this drops intermediate pixels indiscriminately.
Extreme Downscaling Ratios: When viewing an A4 document at 49% zoom, a 500px headline occupies only ~245 physical screen pixels. Downscaling a 4,500px supersampled texture into 245 pixels represents an 18x reduction. Point sampling evaluated only 1 out of every 324 texels, discarding over 95% of subtle gradient and stroke details.
The Zoom-Aware 2.0x SSAA Engine
Version 5.2.3 replaced static pixel generation with dynamic physical screen demand calculations in elements/wordart/beta-wordart.js:
Bicubic Hardware Filtering: Replaced contrast optimization flags with image-rendering: auto !important; image-rendering: smooth !important; across stylesheets and element templates, directing GPU shaders to apply smooth bicubic interpolation with mipmapping.
Dynamic Physical Screen Supersampling: The engine queries state.zoom and window.devicePixelRatio to determine exact physical on-screen pixel demand, supersampling at exactly 2.0x SSAA. This represents the golden ratio for edge anti-aliasing without oversampling penalties.
Dynamic Zoom Re-Baking: Adjusting the workspace zoom slider, mouse wheel, or fit-to-page controls automatically triggers debounced canvas re-baking via upgradeAllCanvasWordArt(), updating rasters to match current magnification.
High-Precision 2D Canvas Smoothing: Enabled ctx.imageSmoothingEnabled = true and ctx.imageSmoothingQuality = 'high' across all raster contexts.
Dedicated Print Spooler Independence
While in-editor display adjusts dynamically for smooth viewing, the background print engine in extensions/print-engine.js continues to bake WordArt at dedicated 4.0x print density (up to 6,000px). PDF exports and physical printouts maintain razor-sharp 300+ DPI press quality.
Tip: WordArt elements automatically recalculate optimal resolution as you zoom in to inspect fine details or zoom out to view full-page layout balance.
