A cornerstone capability of Open Publisher is its ability to import and convert legacy publication formats, including Microsoft Publisher (.pub), legacy Microsoft Word (.doc), and modern Word documents (.docx). Because parsing proprietary legacy desktop publishing schemas requires specialized server-side libraries (such as libmspub), Open Publisher routes uploaded files through secure cloud conversion worker tunnels. When external network disruptions impacted tunnel routing, conversion jobs could stall or fail silently. Version 4.19.4 deployed a targeted resilience patch to restore robust conversion connectivity.

The conversion pipeline in io/file-io.js delegates binary parsing to dedicated conversion microservices:

Resilient Endpoint Routing: Following upstream tunnel downtime, API calls in file-io.js were re-routed to newly configured, hardened trycloudflare.com tunnel endpoints.

Dedicated Conversion POST Routes: Conversion requests are dispatched to specialized endpoints:
- convert-pub: Deserializes complex Publisher binary streams, extracting vector coordinates, text frame chains, and embedded images.
- convert-doc: Converts Word documents into structured HTML layouts mapped to Open Publisher text boxes and paragraph styles.
Error Handling & Timeout Recovery
Version 4.19.4 hardened client-side network error recovery:

Graceful UI Notifications: Instead of silent promise rejections, network errors display clear status notifications guiding users on connection status or file size limitations.

Client-Side Validation: File types and payloads are validated prior to upload, preventing transmission of corrupted or unsupported files.
Global Cachebuster Synchronization
To ensure all users received the updated endpoints immediately, cachebusters across index.html, dashboard.js, and templates.js were bumped to ?v=4.19.4, clearing stale worker scripts from browser caches.
