Text Box Element Copy and Paste Pipeline
Open Publisher features an intelligent multi-tier copy and paste pipeline designed to handle two distinct publishing tasks: duplicating an entire formatted text box element across pages, and copying highlighted character spans to the system clipboard. Version 4.20.6 streamlined the underlying focus-recovery engine, ensuring that selecting a text box container and pressing Ctrl + C cleanly duplicates the complete text box element without requiring internal text selection.
Selecting the text box bounding frame copies the full element; double-clicking inside copies highlighted character text.
Element Copy vs. Text Copy Modes
Open Publisher distinguishes between element-level actions and typography-level actions through context inspection:
Element Duplication Mode: Click the outer border of any text box to select the container. Pressing Ctrl + C (or Cmd + C) copies the entire element - including width, height, background color, borders, margins, padding, and all contained paragraphs. Pressing Ctrl + V creates an exact duplicate offset slightly on the canvas.
Formatted Text Mode: Double-click inside the text box to enter typing mode. Highlight any sentence or word, then press Ctrl + C. The formatted text is placed onto the system clipboard, ready to paste into other text frames, tables, or external applications.
The Focus Recovery Pipeline
The internal clipboard engine in extensions/legacy-fixes.js manages focus transitions between the toolbar and canvas:
Selection Verification: When clicking a Ribbon button or pressing keyboard shortcuts, the copy engine checks both isTextEditing and hasTextSelection.
Eliminating False Traps: If a text box is selected as an object without text highlighted inside it, the copy pipeline safely bypasses the text-copy branch and routes directly to element cloning.
Internal Clipboard Storage: Duplicated text boxes retain custom typography scaling, line heights, font family bindings, and CSS drop shadows across paste operations.
Cross-Page Layout Replication
Duplicating text boxes across spreads or multi-page publications is seamless. Select the text frame on Page 1, press Ctrl + C, navigate to Page 2 or Page 3 via the sidebar navigation pane, and press Ctrl + V. The text frame pastes into the new page canvas preserving exact proportional coordinates.
Tip: You can also use the Ribbon Copy and Paste buttons on the Home tab for mouse-driven duplication workflows.
