Desktop System Fonts & Proofing

Typography is the heartbeat of desktop publishing. The Open Publisher V5 desktop client unifies your local operating system fonts with Google Web Fonts into a single, high-fidelity typography engine, paired with Safari-grade subpixel font smoothing and offline proofing.

Local System Fonts Integration

In web-based design tools, you are often restricted to a fixed list of online web fonts. In the V5 desktop client, Open Publisher automatically discovers all true-type and open-type fonts installed on your computer:

  • Unified Dropdown: All installed fonts (such as Helvetica, Segoe UI, Arial, Times New Roman, and custom corporate fonts) appear alphabetically sorted alongside curated Google Fonts.

  • Source Indicators: The dropdown displays intuitive badges so you always know where a font originated: a Desktop Monitor icon for local system fonts, and a Google "G" icon for web fonts.

  • Embedded Packaging: When you save in .opub format, font metrics are neatly bundled, ensuring your publication looks identical on any computer.

Safari-Grade Subpixel Rendering

To eliminate jagged text on standard and high-DPI displays, Open Publisher V5 enables hardware-accelerated GPU 2D canvas rasterization and subpixel font smoothing. Headings and small body text render with crisp, dark-mode-optimized clarity identical to macOS and Safari typography standards.

Native Offline Proofing

Proofing in V5 does not depend on cloud servers or remote API connections:

  1. Bundled Hunspell Dictionaries: Open Publisher bundles offline English (US and GB) dictionaries directly inside the client directory.

  2. Real-Time Squiggly Underlines: Misspellings in text boxes and canvas areas are highlighted immediately with native red squiggly underlines.

  3. Right-Click Proofing Menu: Right-clicking any flagged word opens a native context menu with phonetic suggestions and a one-click Add to Dictionary option.

Note: Custom words added to your dictionary are preserved locally across all publications and software updates.
