Smart Arrows Stroke Bleed & Print Overflow Precision

Smart Arrows Stroke Bleed & Print Overflow Precision

Digital publishing workflows demand that on-screen document designs translate with 100% precision onto physical paper and exported PDF files. Following the introduction of the Smart Arrows Engine in version 5.3.0, users designing directional arrows with thick borders (such as 16px to 24px outlines) discovered that arrowheads and corner joins were occasionally truncated with flat, chopped edges in printed output. Version 5.3.2 resolved this issue by implementing dynamic stroke bleed padding and coordinate translation in the print rasterizer.

Arrow outlines with rounded corner joins and end caps print with full fidelity without flat edge clipping.

The Geometry of Centred Vector Strokes

Investigation revealed why the on-screen canvas rendered strokes smoothly while print rasterizers clipped them:

  • Centred Stroke Expansion: In SVG rendering, vector strokes expand symmetrically outward and inward from the path geometry. For a 24px stroke, the outline extends 12px beyond the path bounds. At sharp corners (such as arrow tip vertices and barb wings), rounded joins (stroke-linejoin="round") project up to 1.5x the stroke width beyond nominal boundaries.

  • Canvas Bounding Box Discrepancy: In the live editor, the parent container uses overflow: visible, allowing strokes to render beyond the dotted selection box. However, during print preparation, bakeSmartArrowForPrint() created an offscreen canvas strictly sized to [w * scaleFactor] x [h * scaleFactor].

  • Hard Canvas Clipping: Because HTML5 2D canvases hard-clip any pixel coordinates below zero or beyond canvas dimensions, the outer half of the stroke was truncated into unsightly flat edges in printouts and PDFs.

Dynamic Bleed Padding & Coordinate Translation

Version 5.3.2 updated the print rasterizer in extensions/print-engine.js:

  • Dynamic Padding Calculation: Evaluates active stroke width and applies a safety margin: pad = Math.ceil(Math.max(20, strokeWidth * 1.5 + 4)). For a 24px border, this provides 40px of transparent safety bleed on all four sides.

  • Canvas Expansion & Coordinate Translation: The offscreen raster canvas expands by pad * 2, and the 2D context executes ctx.translate(pad, pad). Any corner join or cap extending into negative coordinates lands safely in the transparent bleed margin.

  • Negative Offset Positioning: The resulting baked image is inserted with top: -pad and left: -pad. Because -pad + pad = 0px, the vector arrow aligns with 100% subpixel precision to original canvas positions.

  • Asynchronous Pre-Print Decoding: The print engine awaits complete image decoding via loadImageStrict() before triggering final page rasterization, eliminating race conditions.

Tip: You can safely apply heavy decorative outlines (up to 24px) to Smart Arrows with full confidence that exported PDFs and printouts will preserve round caps and crisp corners.
