Special Characters, Typographic Symbols & Glyph Palette
Professional publication layout demands access to typographic punctuation, international currency markers, and mathematical operators that do not exist on standard physical keyboards. While casual computer users often resort to copying symbols from external web pages or memorizing four-digit numerical Alt-codes, Open Publisher provides a dedicated Special Characters and Glyph Palette integrated directly into its text formatting suite. This allows authors and graphic designers to insert precise typographic characters with exact font matching and line height preservation.
Access international currency marks, typographic punctuation, and mathematical operators directly from the Insert ribbon.
Accessing the Symbol Palette
The Symbol Palette can be opened at any time while editing text:
Ribbon Location: Click the Insert tab and select Symbols > Special Characters to open the interactive character grid.
International Currency Symbols: Insert major global currency notations including Euro (€), British Pound (£), Japanese/Chinese Yen (¥), Indian Rupee (₹), and Cent (¢) with correct baseline alignment.
Legal & Commercial Marks: One-click insertion for Copyright (©), Registered Trademark (®), Trademark (™), Service Mark (℠), and Section (§) symbols.
Mathematical Operators: Insert precision mathematical signs including Multiplication (×), Division (÷), Plus-Minus (±), Not Equal (≠), Almost Equal (≈), Less Than or Equal (≤), Greater Than or Equal (≥), and Infinity (∞).
Whitespace & Flow Control Glyphs
Precision typography often depends on invisible flow characters to prevent awkward line breaks:
Non-Breaking Space ( ): Binds words, numbers, and units together so they never separate across a line wrap (for example, keeping "100 km" or "Figure 3" on the same line).
Zero-Width Space (U+200B): Marks invisible potential break points within long URLs, file paths, or complex compounds without displaying an unwanted hyphen.
Soft Hyphen (): Specifies a discretionary hyphenation point that only appears if the word falls at the end of a line.
Caret Insertion & Font Fallback Resilience
When a symbol is selected from the palette, it is inserted directly at the active text caret, inheriting the current font family, font size, weight, and color. If an active font lacks a specific mathematical or rare currency glyph, Open Publisher's font rendering engine triggers system Unicode fallback without distorting text frame dimensions.
Tip: You can quickly insert a non-breaking space inside any active text box by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Space.
Unicode & Typographic Mojibake Restoration
Version 5.8.6 resolved character corruption (mojibake) across special typographic glyphs. Curly quotes (both single and double), em and en dashes, bullet points, and degree symbols imported from external documents or pasted from web pages retain their exact Unicode UTF-8 encoding across all document save and export cycles.
