External File Watcher

External File Watcher

When designing publications in professional production environments, source assets and documents are frequently updated outside the primary application. Whether syncing through cloud services (such as OneDrive, Dropbox, or Google Drive), collaborating over local network shares, or editing graphics in external illustration tools, Open Publisher V5 keeps your active document synchronized through an automated background file-watching engine.

Automated Active File Monitoring

Whenever a publication is opened, saved, or chosen from the Recent Files list, Open Publisher initializes a dedicated operating system file watcher targeting the exact file path on disk:

  • Zero-Leak Watcher Management: The client cleanly terminates any existing file watcher threads before binding to a newly active document. This prevents ghost events and ensures zero background memory accumulation.

  • Unified File Path Tracking: Whether you open a document via drag-and-drop, the Startup Wizard, or the File menu, the watcher attaches instantaneously.

Debounced Reload Logic

Operating systems and cloud sync utilities often emit a burst of file modification and rename events for a single save action. Open Publisher eliminates duplicate alerts using a precision 500ms debounce timer:

  1. Event Debouncing: File modification triggers are grouped into a single consolidated notification, avoiding alert spam.

  2. User Confirmation: A clean modal prompt asks whether you wish to reload the externally modified file.

  3. Smooth Canvas Re-population: If accepted, the document reloads into the canvas seamlessly, triggering a subtle status bar confirmation while preserving your view settings.

Atomic Save Collision Locking

To prevent the application from confusing its own internal saves with external modifications, Open Publisher incorporates an intelligent lock during save routines:

  • App Saving Lock: During internal atomic saves, a global lock flag is raised and maintained for 2,000 milliseconds. The watcher quietly ignores all file rotation and rename events triggered by the app itself.

  • Automatic Inode Re-Binding: Because atomic saving writes to a temporary file before replacing the target, the operating system file node changes. Open Publisher automatically re-establishes the watcher against the new file descriptor immediately following the save.

Note: The external file watcher operates entirely locally and consumes less than 1% CPU, ensuring maximum battery life on laptops.
