Windows XP Dedicated Desktop Client Port & Architecture Modernization
Retro computing enthusiasts, print shops maintaining vintage prepress equipment, and users in specialized industrial environments frequently rely on Windows XP. Bringing modern desktop publishing to Windows XP presents significant architectural hurdles: contemporary frameworks like Electron and recent Chromium releases have long dropped support for Windows XP. Version 5.8.0 introduced the official Open Publisher Windows XP Dedicated Desktop Client, transforming an optimized Gecko-based engine into a standalone, chromeless publishing application with native window controls, desktop integration bridges, and portable SFX distribution.

The Chromeless Gecko Architecture
The Windows XP client port builds upon MyPal 68 (an optimized fork of Mozilla Firefox 78 ESR supporting ES6+, CSS Grid, Flexbox, Canvas 2D, and Fetch on XP SP3 x86):
Non-Destructive Zero-Height Collapsing: Standard browser UI elements (#nav-bar, #PersonalToolbar, #toolbar-menubar, and #tabbrowser-tabs) were collapsed using height: 0 !important; overflow: hidden !important; opacity: 0 !important; pointer-events: none !important;. This hides browser chrome completely while preserving the underlying XUL DOM tree and active content listeners.
Full Viewport Canvas Stretch: Configured content browser containers with flex: 1 1 auto !important; height: 100% !important;, ensuring the application canvas fills the entire client window frame without scroll offsets.
Integrated Modern Window Controls: Injected custom SVG minimize, maximize/restore, and close buttons into the title bar container with smooth hover transitions and dedicated red hover styling (#e81123) on close.
Desktop Client Web App Bridge
To seamlessly connect the native desktop host with Open Publisher's web runtime, an integration bridge script (tab-content.js) injects before page execution:
Environment Flags: Sets window._isDesktopClient = true and window._desktopBridgeActive = true, signaling to the application that it is running as an installed desktop workstation.
Native Class Injection: Appends the is-desktop-app class to document elements and triggers window.markAsDesktopClient(), suppressing download banners.
Title Bar Padding Protection: Injects responsive spacing (.title-bar { padding-right: 145px !important; }) so top bar action icons never collide with the native window control buttons.
Engine Stability & Portable SFX Packaging
Engine internals were stabilized specifically for legacy Windows environments:
Crash Prevention Guards: Added null checks to UrlbarInput.jsm and focus handlers in browser.js to prevent unhandled exceptions caused by zero-height inputs. Shielded SessionStore.jsm against XPCOM window reading errors.
Direct Startup Preferences: Configured default preferences to boot directly into https://openpublisher.app, disabling default browser prompts and update checks.
Native Branding & Portable Distribution: Renamed binary executable to openpublisher.exe, embedded multi-resolution Windows XP .ico icon suites, and assembled an all-in-one portable SFX package ready for instant execution on Windows XP.
Tip: The Windows XP portable package requires zero installation or registry modifications; simply extract and run openpublisher.exe.
