Importing Tabular Data from CSV, TSV & Spreadsheets

Manually typing numerical datasets, inventory catalogs, event schedules, and financial tables cell-by-cell into desktop publishing software is tedious and introduces transcription errors. Open Publisher features a comprehensive tabular data import engine that converts external Comma-Separated Values (CSV), Tab-Separated Values (TSV), and operating system clipboard data directly into beautifully formatted, styled publication tables.

Importing CSV & TSV Files

The import assistant simplifies importing structured files from disk:

  • Ribbon Access: Open the Table Tools tab and select Import Data > From File (CSV/TSV).

  • Automatic Delimiter Sniffing: The parser analyzes data buffers to differentiate commas, semicolons, and tabs while respecting quoted strings containing embedded punctuation.

  • UTF-8 Character Encoding: Full Unicode compliance ensures special characters, currency symbols, and accented international names import without corruption.

Direct Clipboard Spreadsheet Conversion

Users can copy cell ranges directly from Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, or LibreOffice Calc and paste them onto the canvas:

  • Intelligent Table Paste Detection: Open Publisher identifies TSV-formatted clipboard buffers and prompts the user to generate a new table or populate the currently selected cell range.

  • Auto Column Distribution: Table columns automatically calculate optimal widths based on cell text length while clamping securely to page margin guidelines.

Header Row Formatting & Alternating Fills

During import, checking First Row as Header automatically applies bold typographic hierarchy, contrasting background shading, and bottom border accents. Enabling Banded Rows applies alternating zebra fills to enhance reading comfort across dense rows.

Tip: You can sort table rows alphabetically or numerically at any time by selecting a column and clicking Sort Ascending or Sort Descending.
