Using Styled Text Boxes: Colors, Gradients & Borders
Text boxes are the building blocks of any desktop publishing document, but plain rectangular boxes with white backgrounds can make layouts feel flat. With the Styled Text Box System introduced in Open Publisher, you can quickly insert pre-styled containers or customize fills, gradients, borders, and rounded corners directly from the ribbon without needing to draw separate background shapes.
Pick from pre-styled containers on the Insert tab or customize fills, borders, and corner radii using the dedicated Text Box Tools ribbon.
Inserting a Styled Text Box
Adding a styled container to your canvas is as simple as inserting a standard text box:
Open the Gallery: Switch to the Insert tab and click the small dropdown arrow beneath the Text Box button.
Select a Quick Style: Choose from popular baseline styles, including Simple Text Box, Light Accent Fill, Solid Theme Fill, Gradient Header, or Outlined Card.
Place on Canvas: Click anywhere on your document to place a standard-sized container, or click and drag to size the box to your exact column dimensions.
The Contextual "Text Box Tools" Ribbon
Whenever a styled text box is selected, Open Publisher automatically displays the contextual Text Box Tools tab at the top of your workspace. This dedicated toolbar gives you instant access to all shape and styling controls:
Shape Fill Palette: Pick from 32 curated solid theme colors, or apply one of 8 smooth linear gradient presets (such as Sunset Orange, Ocean Blue, Forest Mist, and Royal Purple) designed to look balanced behind dark or light typography.
Border Weight & Style: Set your container border thickness from a delicate 1px hairline up to a bold 8px accent. Choose between solid, dashed, or dotted stroke patterns.
Corner Rounding: Soften container edges by selecting corner radii from 4px to 24px. Rounded corners give callout cards and testimonial blocks a modern, approachable appearance.
Anchored Color Pickers: When adjusting text color or background fills, color picker popups remain anchored beside your active box, keeping your text cursor selection intact so you can preview changes live.
Instant Placeholder Text
Every newly created styled text box opens with standardized "Click to edit text" placeholder copy. As soon as you begin typing, this placeholder clears automatically, saving you from having to backspace out large dummy paragraphs before adding your real content.
Tip: To create an elegant newsletter pull quote, pick an Outlined Card preset, increase the left border weight to 4px with your theme accent color, and set the background fill to 5% opacity.
