Interactive Backup Manager

Interactive Backup Manager

Safety and revision management are central to the Open Publisher V5 publishing philosophy. Alongside automatic background snapshots, Open Publisher includes a dedicated, interactive Backup Manager window that lets you inspect, search, and restore archived backup files without digging through hidden operating system directories.

Dedicated Backup Storage

In previous releases, safety backup files (.bak) were generated in the same directory as your active publication, occasionally cluttering project folders. In V5, all backup snapshots are safely relocated to an independent, system-managed backup vault. This keeps your working workspace pristine while ensuring that rotating safety copies are always preserved even if local files are rearranged.

Accessing the Backup Manager

You can summon the Backup Manager modal at any time from several convenient locations across the desktop client:

  • Titlebar Control: Click the Backup Manager icon located alongside your topbar window utilities.

  • System Tray Menu: Right-click the Open Publisher icon in your OS taskbar tray and choose Backup Manager from the dynamic menu.

  • Developer & Recovery Overlays: Quick-launch shortcuts are available directly within the diagnostic recovery prompts.

Searching and Restoring Snapshots

The Backup Manager window is fully draggable, allowing you to reposition it anywhere on screen while inspecting your document canvas:

  1. Instant Real-Time Filter: Use the search field at the top of the dialog to instantly filter backups by document name, timestamp, or file size.

  2. Snapshot Details: Each entry displays the original publication name, the exact date and time the backup was captured, and the total file footprint.

  3. Open as Independent Document: Clicking Open Backup launches the archived .bak file as an independent, unsaved publication. Your original file remains completely untouched, allowing you to cherry-pick content or save it as a new revision.

Note: Opening a backup never overwrites your active file. Open Publisher safely loads the historical snapshot into memory with a fresh title, allowing you to compare both versions side by side.
