Classic MS Publisher Cursor Engine & Real-Time Drag Controls
For millions of users who grew up designing newsletters, certificates, and flyers in Microsoft Publisher, few interface elements are as instantly recognizable as the classic "Move Truck" cursor. Introduced in OpenPublisher v5.16.10, the Classic MS Publisher Cursor Engine faithfully recreates that iconic cursor experience alongside significant layout enhancements, including real-time text box resizing without border lag and elevated transform handle hit-zones.

1. The Classic Move Truck & Precision Crosshair Engine
Enabled by default out of the box, the cursor engine dynamically adapts to what you are doing on the canvas:
- The Move Truck Hover Cursor: Whenever your mouse hovers over the draggable border perimeter of a selected text box, shape, image, or table (or any active edge drag strip), the cursor turns into a crisp 28x28 pixel-art moving truck. This gives you instant visual confirmation that you can click and drag to reposition the element.
- The Precision Crosshair Drag Cursor: As soon as you press your mouse button down and begin moving the object across the canvas, the truck switches to a precision
crosshaircursor, providing unobstructed visibility of your alignment guides, ruler ticks, and neighboring content. - Specialized Handle Cursors Protected: Corner and edge resize handles (
.openpublisher-resize-handle) strictly retain their directional resize cursors (nwse-resize,nesw-resize,ns-resize,ew-resize), while text boxes preserve the standard I-beamtextcursor when editing inside words.
2. How to Toggle Classic vs. Modern Cursors
While many creators love the classic Publisher nostalgia, some users prefer standard modern desktop publishing system cursors. OpenPublisher makes toggling effortless:
View Ribbon Toggle ("Classic Drag")
Head to the View ribbon tab and look in the Show group. Click the Classic Drag button (featuring a theme-adaptive teal truck icon) to turn classic cursors on or off with a single click.
Options Modal Preference
Go to File > Options > General and check or uncheck "Use classic MS Publisher drag cursors (Move Truck & Crosshair)". Your preference is saved locally across browser sessions.
3. Real-Time Text Box Resizing & Elevated Handle Layering
Alongside cursor aesthetics, v5.16.10 fixed a longstanding layout quirk with text box resizing:
- Immediate Bounds Tracking: In earlier builds, dragging a text box's bottom resize handle could occasionally lag or freeze the selection outline until the mouse button was released. Version 5.16.10 updates overlay heights dynamically on every frame, so the bounding box expands or shrinks synchronously in real time.
- Elevated Handle Z-Index (1005): Transform handles are elevated above border drag strips (
z-index: 1005vs998), completely preventing accidental moves when you intended to grab a corner handle. - Expanded 4px Invisible Hit-Zones: Each handle now includes an invisible 4px perimeter margin, making it effortless to click and drag corner handles even on high-DPI displays or touch trackpads.
